My Stuffed Sea Critters

My Stuffed Sea Critters

About once a year, I decide to sew up a batch of stuffed sea critters.

Always Obsessed with the Sea

As you can probably tell by now, I have an obsession with ocean life. Kind of ironic, seeing as I am landlocked prairie lady. But, ever since I was a little girl I loved the ocean.

We used to go on family vacations to Vancouver Island. Tofino was one of my favorite places to visit. I would go to the beach at low-tide and wander around, trying to find any kind of sea life. Then, I would attempt to save them. Unfortunately, I was young and naive. So, my idea of saving starfish by putting them on wood and floating them back into the ocean…. probably wasn’t the best idea. But, I had good intentions.

My first stuffed sea critter project I did was in my third year of university. I sewed fish that I stuffed into a net. Next, I sewed fish portraits that I framed and hung on a wall. And finally, I sewed a sushi dinner (including utensils, condiments, etc).

This was a cute project, and was my introduction to making stuffed sea things.

Post-School Stuffed Sea Critters

Since school, I have made two batches of sea critters. The first was a pod of humpback whales. They were large, colorful and decorated in sequins.

The second was a party of lobsters (I don’t know what the official name for group of lobsters is, and google is giving me mixed answers). I had a job as a fishmonger. Part of this job was handling and dealing with lobsters. We always had an… interesting relationship, me and the lobsters. I have had their guts sprayed on me one too many times. But they are such neat little bullies. So, I needed to make my own.

What’s Happening Next?

It’s about that time of year, where I need to start making my next batch of sea critters. I love them all soooooo much, that I am open to some suggestions of what my next project should be!

Just leave me a comment, or send me an email with your thoughts. I am thinking….. starfish? seal? clams? I DON’T KNOW WHAT I THINK.

Thank you for stopping by, and hanging out with me and my sea critters. I would love to hear from you!

As always, Much Love!!!!!
